Crossing Cambodia in Style - Bangkok to Saigon

Let us guide you around this fascinating region where you will witness contemporary life blending into exquisite historical temples as well as the romance of the Mekong Delta.

Kick things off in Bangkok and explore the awe inspiring Grand Palace, golden Buddhist temples and traditional floating markets. Spend your first 2 nights in the heart of the city at the Davis Hotel. The next morning you are whisked off by your driver out into the Thai countryside towards the Cambodian border. You head south, along a bumpy tree lined highway that cuts through rice paddy and maize fields, to Battambang.

Battambang is Cambodia’s second largest city and, not so long ago, was within target range of a stronghold of the erstwhile Khmer Rouge and was therefore off-limits to most travellers. After a long day travelling, we recommend 2 nights at La Villa, a lovingly restored 1930’s colonial villa, to give you a full day to explore the local countryside and villages. You will then embark on one of the most stunning boat trips in Cambodia. Water levels permitting travel by wooden boat from Battambang to Siem Reap, the gateway to the majestic temples of Angkor and a charming little city. Make the most of the temples and local café culture by staying for 3 nights at the lovely Heritage Suites, before you journey south towards Phnom Penh, stopping at the rarely visited Sambor Prei Kuk, one of the most important pre-Angkorian sites in the country.

A couple of nights in the capital will give you a full day to take in the national museum, Royal Palace, and an optional trip out to the Killing Fields for a sobering reminder of Cambodia’s recent history. We recommend staying at the sophisticated Raffles le Royal. Back to the river, and the boat as your mode of transport, and travel down the Mekong into Vietnam aboard the Blue Cruiser. Spend a night in the town of Chau Doc before continuing by road to the university town of Can Tho for a night at the heart of the Mekong Delta. The Victoria in Can Tho will be your home on the banks of the Hau River.

After a couple of days of relative peace and serenity the last leg of your Indochina adventure sees you in Ho Chi Minh – Vietnams’ most cosmopolitan city. Shop till you drop, enjoy a city tour on a classic Citroen or Vespa scooter and, time permitting, make a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels before heading home. Spend 2 nights at the Caravelle Hotel.

A 14 night trip as listed, including accommodation, transportation (car and boat), local guides and sightseeing, and international flights with Thai Airways starts from £2700 per person. If you have a little more time to spare and wanted to spend a few restful days luxuriating on the beach to round things off, why not take a short flight to beautiful Phu Quoc island, just off Vietnam’s south coast. The clear waters, isolated beaches, forested interior and local character make for an ideal beach extension. Just an hour flight from Saigon, stay at La Veranda for a sublime tropical escape.
