For a year round alternative, active holiday spot, then Lyngen Lodge is a consistently good choice for families of experienced skiers and older groups alike. In the winter the skiing and snowboarding is excellent and promises vastly different scenery from the more traditional ski spots of France, Italy and Austria. Sloping mountains run onto snowy beaches with dramatic panoramic views as you descend of Northern Norway’s fresh white archipelago. After an exhilarating day on the slopes, you will travel back to lodge cruising along the Norwegian fjords. Where Ski in-ski out may be the desired option in Europe, you can make the most of being in Arctic and take in the unique surroundings and sights as you are transported by boat, 4 by 4 or skidoos to the summit and the best skiing and snowboarding opportunities
In the evening at the lodge, dinner is served by a log fire and made up local produce and delicacies; wolf fish, reindeer and local lamb are some of the delights on the menu. Guests are invited to make the most of the Lodges outside hot tubs and sauna to soothe aching muscles and hopefully spot the elusive northern lights. The northern lights cycle peaks during the winter of 2011/2012 making this winter the most vibrant and colourful viewing for the next 6-7 years.
The landscape changes from the stark white of winter to a colourful bloom at the beginning of May, which marks the start of the midnight sun. The area becomes alive with migrating birds, flowers and waterfalls and makes it an unusual European scenic summer getaway. Northern Norway in the summer presents the chance to venture out fishing for salmon, walking and trekking, even taking a helicopter out for the more serious hikers or a boat through the fjords to try Glacier walking and climbing. You can also try your hand at cat sailing, sea kayaking and horse riding. Northern Norway is fantastic region for nature lovers with the Humpback and Springer whales making an appearance, and a number of migratory birds such as the Sea Eagle.
Dare to be different? Prices for flights to Tromso, transfers and a weeks accommodation at Lyngen Lodge starts at around £1,500 per person.
