Manmade archaeological sites in Peru range from the famous ancient citadel at Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley with its Inca capital of Cusco - ideally visiting in June to witness the spectacular Inti Raymi Festival of the Sun - to a wealth of pre-Inca archaeological sites and lost cities in the less well known region of Peru, wheer the distance from the crowds gives you a real sense of discovery.
For the more adventurous, the four day classic Inca Trail is a must, allowing you to gaze at the scenic peaks and admire the terraced valley slopes of the Andes. These terraces are seen more dramatically where the Colca Canyon cuts through the mountainous landscape and the Condor files, a world away from the southern Peruvian rainforest where wildlife enthusiasts can experience their first encounter with the Amazon.
