The North East coast of Sri Lanka has recently opened back up to tourism, and apparently we’ve been missing out on some of the best coastline that the island has to offer. We’ve heard fantastic reports about the Nilaveli in Trincomalee, so Philip is off this August to find out more. All in the name of research I’m sure.
The Nilaveli is ideal for those who enjoy a quiet life, as this is relatively remote spot. The local town of Trincomalee has the largest Dutch Fort in Sri Lanka, which is well worth a visit. For Nature lovers, then it is a birdwatchers haven with lots of great spots to get out to including a boat journey out to Pigeon Island to see the Blue Rock Pigeon, where you can also spend the day packed off with a picnic, sunbathing and exploring. Over 12 species of whale pass through the bay throughout the year, including Pygamy Blue, Sperm and Bydes Whale. Dolphin spottings are also frequent. The Nilavelis dive school can arrange for you to dive snorkel to explore and marvel at the abundance of the vibrant marine life in this area.
For those who prefer to spend their time on land and by the beach then you are certainly in for a treat. The beach is vast and unusually wide, with soft golden sand and calm waters. You’ll have breakfast on the beach each morning, and for the early risers, this is a perfect spot to watch the sun rise over the ocean or to relax in the evening with a seafood platter, freshly caught that day.
The Nilaveli prides itself on the quality of its food, with a fine dining restaurant offer Sri Lankan and western cuisine, a poolside restaurant, for pre and post dinner drinks there is a lounge to relax in, and the Supper Club bar for drinking and dancing. With 45 rooms, the Niliveli is a relatively small hotel with comfortably furnished rooms.
We can either tailor make your itinerary to fit with our Cultural Sri Lanka suggestions, or if you’d like to get straight to the beach we can simply team it with an overnight stop in Kandy to break up the journey.
