The largest island in the Caribbean has all the usual clichés that we associate with the area – sugary sand beaches, laid back seaside villages, and a fertile, scenic interior. But Cuba is so much more interesting than that, with its socialist legacy jarring with its party atmosphere, colonial architecture shaming the upstart resorts, a rich culture but material poverty, so this is an island to explore. Many key sights in the west are easily accessible on day trips from the capital, while attractions at the eastern end of the island need more time. With just over a week, we advise you to centre yourself around Havana, ideally staying on the edge of ‘Havana Vieja’ at the stylish Saratoga, or the renovated heritage building of the Sevilla Hotel. After regular forays into the somewhat frenetic old centre with its arts and crafts markets, majestic cathedral, a wealth of museums, and buzzing open air bars, you’ll be ready to pick up a car and head out a couple of hours west. Take in the startling scenery of the Vinales valley where the best tobacco in the world is grown, swim in the impossibly clear water of Cayo Levisa and relax for a day or two before getting back on the road to drive four or five hours down to the Unesco World Heritage Site of Trinidad. This photogenic town attracts many visitors but the cobbled streets, painted, shuttered windows and its position in the lee of the Escambray Mountains warrant at least a night or two, which gives you time for a trek into the hills, or a swim from the white sand beach of Playa Ancon. Then it’s back to Havana for another quick spin around town and a final mojito before the flight home. We’ll save the rawer setting of Santiago and the beach delights of Cuba’s eastern Atlantic coastline for your return visit!
Direct Flights, Private Transfers and a ten nights in a good standard of accomodation starts at £1,880 per person. If you are interested in exploring the delights of Cuba, please email, or call on 0207 359 3938.
