Of all the islands that make up the vast archipelago of Indonesia, Bali is one of the largest, and by far the best known. However, away from the mainstream mayhem of Kuta and glitz of Seminyak there are some very special parts of Bali where you can still gain true insight into the Balinese culture.
Ubud is hailed as the cultural heart of Bali, and is well known for its arts and crafts with the chance to witness Balinese dancing and maybe catch a glimpse of a traditional Hindu ceremony. However it is the natural beauty and ambience in Ubud that makes its truly unforgettable. The town is centred around the Ayung River Gorge, a steep gorge and rushing river running through the heart of the town. In places the river is flanked by steep lush green rice paddies, which is unmissable. In the morning it’s shrouded by an early morning mist, clearing in the afternoon for breathtaking views and by evening is magical as the sun sets.
In Ubud, our suggestion is a Pool Suite at the Uma Ubud hotel. A small hotel perfectly contemporary whilst maintaining a Balinese feel, complete with a COMO Shambala Spa.
Our next suggestion would be venture over to the town of Karangasem in East Bali, which is largely overlooked by the majority of tourists that visit Bali, to stay in a Garden Suite at the divine and impeccable Amankila. The nearby towns of Sidemen, Tenganan and Kamasan are the best places on the island to shop for textiles, crafts, paintings and hand crafted silver, and you can arrange a driver to take you to the largest local market in East Bali to see everything from cockerels, to fresh fish to carpets being traded. Learn some pigeon Balinese, as on this part of the island English isn’t widely spoken, and watch as the locals fall about laughing at your pronunciation.
For flights from London, 5 nights at the Uma Ubud, 5 nights at the Amankila, with breakfast, private transfers throughout and a few extras thrown in, the price to stay in peak season is from £3,379per person. We can also tailor make a package just for you. Please call 0207 359 3938 or email for more information.
