Still relatively untouched by mass tourism, Laos is one of southern Asia’s last bastions of a slower, simpler life. Now is the time to discover this land of misty mountains, orange robed monks, flowing waterfalls and traditional hill tribes.
Arrive into the country in suitably leisurely style by gently meandering down the Mekong from the Laos/Thailand border town of Houey Xay on a Luang Say cruise boat.
After a night enroute, you arrive into Luang Prabang - the spiritual capital of the country, and a UNESCO protected site that has retained a unique otherworldly ambience. Climb the 328 steps to the top of Mt. Phousi to enjoy panoramic views as dawn breaks, before visiting the famous Wat Xieng Thong temple and browsing the locally made handicrafts at the large night market. The city also makes a great base for day trips to local villages, trekking, kayaking the rivers and visiting the nearby Kuang Si waterfalls. You can also visit the mysterious Pak Ou caves, where you will see thousands of Buddha statues crammed into the caves carved from towering limestone cliffs. Spend 3 nights at Masion Souvannaphoum.
Next port of call is Vientiane, which although it is the country’s capital retains the feeling of a large provincial town. Glimpses of the years of the French occupation are still apparent in its colonial architecture and tree lined boulevards. Stay at the Settha Palace Hotel for a night and visit the temples of Wat Si Saket and the National Museum.
A short flight south is the town of Pakse, which sits on the confluence of the Mekong and Sedone Rivers, and is home to a large number of Vietnamese as well as many impressive waterfalls nearby. Explore the 4000 islands and World Heritage Site of Wat Phou,a spectacular pre-Angkorian temple, by cruising for a couple of days and nights on a traditional rice barge. The nearby La Folie Lodge, is the ideal place to soak up the surroundings and explore the area by boat or bike before returning to Pakse for your onward travel. Spend 2 nights here in peace and tranquility.
A trip to Laos can easily be combined with a few days in Bangkok or a longer overland trip through into Cambodia – we can tailor make a trip to meet your specific requirements.
A 9 night tour through Laos including accommodation, cruises and domestic and international flights starts at £2300 per person.
