Just across the Palk Strait from India lies the emerald isle of Sri Lanka. Whilst geographically close to India, Sri Lanka bears little resemblance to her neighbour, except as in India around every corner there are greetings, smiles, and gestures of generosity.
You’ll be collected from the airport and whisked up to contemporary, luxury Vil Uyana for a 3 night stay. As you check into your stilted villa you’ll know you’ve arrived somewhere really very special. Whilst staying at the Vil Uyana we’ll provide you with a driver and a private guide to take you around the cultural triangle to the archaeological sites at Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa. These are a record of a golden age of Buddhism dating back to the 3rd Century BC, with their complexes of temples, stupas, royal palaces and relic houses. The occasional heart pounding moments you experience whilst climbing Sigirya is well worth it as the history at the top is fascinating, and the views vast.
From Vil Uyana you will begin your trip to the picturesque Tea Trails high in the mountains, with an overnight stop in the colonial Mas Villas near Kandy en route. You can venture into Kandy visit the renowned Temple of the Tooth, Sri Lanka’s most sacred site, where the Buddha tooth relic currently resides. Or simply stay reclined next to the infinity pool and enjoy the scenery. The rolling lush green hills of fragrant tea plantations make tranquil viewing, especially when accompanied with a local brew. The air is pure and the Tea Trails bungalows five star luxury.
Your next adventure is a journey out into the jungle at Uda Walawe National Park where you will stay for the next two nights in luxury Safari tents. During the day you’ll enjoy game drives through the park with any luck spotting elephant, leopard and a whole host of bird and wildlife. In the evening, you’ll enjoy gourmet dining under the stars and fall asleep with calls of nature all around you. An incredible experience.
The final stop is perfectly intimate Reef Villa. With only 7 suites, set amongst tropical gardens, the Indian Ocean and white sand beaches, it can only be described at Paradise. Five nights here before you are dragged back to the airport for your flight home.
For direct flights with Sri Lanka airlines, 14 night’s luxury accommodation as detailed, private car and transfers throughout, private guiding during your time at Vil Uyana, breakfast throughout and all inclusive board at Tea Trails and Uda Walawe, plus game drives in the National Park, prices begin at £2,849 pp, based on two people sharing. While your on the area, you also have the option of adding on the Maldves.
If you'd like to venture East, to some beautiful beaches relatively untouched by tourism, then the Nilaveli is a great choice.
