The Himalayan range covers the entire northern part of India, nestling five major states of the country within it. The ancient Indian pilgrims who have travelled in these mountains since time immemorial coined a Sanskrit word for them meaning "Abode of Snow". Some of the reasons why people have been so fascinated by the Indian Himalaya are the ancient Hindu pilgrim routes, the low valleys that abruptly rise up in high mountain ranges providing ideal trekking country, densely forested areas lying just a mountain range away from barren cold deserts and the lovely people of the mountains with their unique and hospitable lifestyles in an often unforgiving terrain.

Trekking in the Himalaya poses a problem in the summer because of the monsoon, however Ladakh, a small corner in the far north of the country, offers perfect weather conditions for summer treks, located as it is on the Tibetan Plateau in the rain shadow. This high altitude trekking destination has a short season with the weather allowing access between late May and late September only, and has undoubtedly some of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet.
