Fly to Delhi and connect to a domestic flight, over the Himalayas, to Leh, the capital of the ancient Buddhist Kingdom of Ladakh. As flights leave very early from Delhi to Leh you will probably need to overnight in Delhi.
Located at over 3500 meters high in the Tibetan Plateau of Ladakh, the ancient city of Leh is surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of snowcapped Himalayan peaks. Small enough to easily explore by foot, the town is dominated by the crumbling Leh Palace which looms over the city against a deep blue sky. The people of Leh are incredibly welcoming and warm smiles will greet you wherever you are. In the immediate vicinity are several important monasteries including Tikse and Shey where Buddhist monks from boys to men perform daily morning prayer ceremonies which you can attend.
Due to your sudden gain in altitude we would recommend you spend 4 nights in Leh, at the Omasila, doing relaxing day trips and shopping in the bazaars. By day 3 you might be ready for a bit more adventure in which case we can add in a rafting trip down the Zanskar River passing by astoundingly beautiful mountains, with tiny villages and imposing old monasteries nestling among the valleys.
After 3 or 4 days acclimitising you should be ready to start your trek. There are several possibilities on offer and which one is right for you will depend on time and how strenuous you want it to be – please note that due to high altitudes you should not consider trekking in Ladakh unless you have a reasonable level of fitness. Perhaps the best short trek in the region is The Markha Valley trek which makes a circuit of the prominent Stok Kangri group of peaks, which lie to the south of Leh. Staying in dome tents and with full porterage and guides, you will cross the Ganda La (4900m / 16,075ft) to enter the Markha Valley, whilst at the end of the trek you reach even higher altitudes at Kongmaru La (5100m / 16,730ft) to return to the Indus Valley. From here snow peaks lie in every direction and on a clear day the giants of the Karakoram, including K2 can be seen on the north-western horizon. There are opportunities to visit remote settlements and monasteries en route and the valley is also home to several species of wildlife including wolf and snow leopard.
Note: For those with less time, or families with active children, you could consider a shorter overnight trek.
Your trek will bring you back to Leh from where you can then head off to the Nubra Valley, over the, often claimed, world’s highest navigable pass. The Nubra Valley is an outstanding area to visit, and an area which few visitors venture to and one of those rare places on earth where, from the back of a camel, you can see the splendid beauty of a desert and rolling mountains and snow peaks. Stay 2 nights at Chamba Camp before returning to Leh and then on to Delhi by air.
Combine a trek with a Shakti Village Experience or maybe as part of a longer trip to Rajasthan. Please call 0207 359 3938 or email Matt and we can put together a tailormade trip of a lifetime
