Fly to Delhi where, after a night to recover from the flight, you will be met by your car and driver for the journey into the Thar Desert.
First stop is the Shekawati region, far less visited than other parts of Rajasthan, and famous for its painted havelis. Stay 2 nights at Castle Mandawa giving you a day to take a jeep safari out into the surrounding countryside. Visit the blackbuck sanctuary at Tal Chhapar which is also home to many migratory birds which pass through between September and March.
Continue by road to Bikaner, situated in the northern part of Rajasthan. At one time it was an important city on the great caravan trade route during the medieval period. The city is surrounded by high fortifications comprising a seven-kilometre long wall which encircles the old city and has five entrances, all constructed in the 18th century. Hot and dry throughout the year, it has the feel of a real frontier town. During a 2 night stay at Gajner Lake Palace you can enjoy a guided visit to the impressive Junagarh Fort and the Lalgarh Palace and, for the not so squeamish, a visit to the Karni Mata Temple, where thousands of resident rats are considered sacred, should be included.
It is then a long drive to Jaisalmer a magical and friendly place, whose imposing fort towers over the town. Local colour and warm hospitality prevail over the inhospitable and forbidding terrain of the surrounding desert and sand dunes that can be explored by camel. One of the main attractions is the imposing 12th century Jaisalmer Fort, as well as the beautiful havelis built by the wealthy merchants of Jaisalmer, many of which have now been converted into shops selling wonderful antiques. If you have made it this far into the desert then you should allow yourself at least 3 nights. Tempting as it is to stay within the fort why not treat yourself at Mool Sagar – an oasis in the sands just 9km from the town.
During your time here enjoy a guided city sightseeing tour of Jaisalmer, visiting the fort and surrounding area with its havelis. Add in a jeep safari on the sand dunes and you should have just enough time left to enjoy some shopping.
To get a true insight into desert life you need to strike out beyond the towns and villages and sleep under the starlit sky at Reggies Camel Camp. This can be achieved on a 2 night / 3 day camel safari which will include a night at your very own mobile desert camp as well as opportunities to stop at different tribal dwellings and to view various species of desert wildlife- including the bluebull (one of asia's largest antelopes).
After 2 nights in the wilderness you will be longing for some creature comforts which you will get at Ranvas, a recently opened property that lies within the ramparts of Nagaur’s magnificent Ahhichatracharh Fort.
There can be few places in the world where you can stay in your own, virtually private fort, and a spectacularly grand one at that; take an evening stroll around the ramparts, gaze down on busy city life outside the walls, before returning to watch the sun go down behind the ramparts with your gin and tonic in hand.
Your final stop is Jaipur where you can do some final shopping, visit the Amber Palace and other sights, before flying back to the UK.
Do something different:
With direct flights between Jaipur and Muscat why not include a night or two at the Chedi Muscat for a luxurious beach break at the end of your desert adventure.
