Upon arrival into Cochin you are met and transferred straight to the famed Keralan backwaters, where you stay for 2 nights overlooking Lake Vembanad at the luxurious retreat Purity. A calming ambience has been created in a serene waterfront setting, with well kept gardens and open courtyards, where you can relax by the pool or indulge in the traditional ayurvedic spa treatments on offer.

After check out you are picked up at the jetty for an overnight backwaters cruise onboard Discovery, a luxurious and eco-friendly houseboat created and owned by the Malabar Escapes group who also run Purity. Relax in comfort as the lush tropical scenery unfolds before your eyes, and watch the locals going about their daily routine. You will sample delicious local food as prepared by your on-board chef while enjoying the ultimate in peace and tranquility.

A short transfer finds you in historic Fort Cochin, home to the iconic Chinese fishing nets and full of colonial heritage. Here you can visit the Mattancherry Dutch Palace, Jewish synagogue and St.Francis Church- the original resting place of Vasco de Gama. There is a relaxed ambience in the air, and there are plenty of local cafes and restaurants as well as a blossoming artistic community to discover. This is also one of the best places to take in a traditional Kathakali dance performance. Stay for 2 nights in the stylishly understated Old Harbour Hotel, situated just moments from the fishing nets and a true oasis of calm set amidst beautiful gardens.

Take a train north to Calicut and experience authentic Indian train travel, before being met at the station and transferred inland towards the town of Sultan’s Battery to spend 2 nights at Tranquil – an authentic plantation homestay set on a 400 acre coffee and vanilla estate. Your hosts will take you on a tour of the plantation, and you can also visit nearby Eddakal Caves or the Muthanga Game Sanctuary.

Journey further north to Tellicherry to spend 2 nights at the famous Ayesha Manzil an elegant homestay run by Mrs Faiza who is renowned for her Keralan Mopillah cuisine. Meal times here are an event, and you can take cooking classes and also venture to the local markets to barter for spices, fresh produce and seafood. The house has been in the family for over 100 years and affords great sea views and excellent sunsets.

Finish your trip in the unspoilt far north of Kerala at the enchanting beachfront hideaway Neeleshwar Hermitage for 4 nights of relaxing bliss. Swim the calm Arabian seas from the beautiful beach or enjoy the views from the magnificent infinity pool. The ayurvedic spa treatments are top quality as is the food, served either in the main restaurant or on the beach. The hermitage is a true retreat for the senses, where the emphasis is very much on wellness for the body and soul, and the perfect place to end your trip before flying home from Mangalore.
