Begin your journey with a 2 night stay in atmospheric Cochin. Spend a day exploring Mattancherry, with its Dutch Royal Palace, and the old trading area of Jew town – home to spice warehouses, an ancicent synagogue and a plethora of antique shops. In the evening observe the fisherman working the famous Chinese fishing nets before enjoying a fantastic sea food meal at one of Cochins many excellent restaurants.
Turning inland you will be driven through small villages and rolling tea plantations to the villa of Munnar for a 2 night stay at Windermere Estate, a 60 acre cardamom plantation surrounded by stunning views of the Western Ghats. With plenty of local walks from the property itself, it is a terrific location to do some gentle trekking. Anything from short walks around the estate to longer walks towards Attukadu waterfall, where a special picnic can be provided, can be easily arranged.
Staying in the Western Ghats your car and driver will take you on to Periyar National Park for a 2 night stay. South India’s most popular wildlife sanctuary is home to a range of accommodation but if you enjoy fabulous home cooked food then you should make a bee line for Kanjirapally Estate, a working cardamom and coffee plantation. Lake Periyar was created in 1896 by the British who flooded the area to create a dam that would provide water for Madurai and the semi-submerged trees left behind serve as perches for the many birds who have made Periyar their home. It is also home to bison, antelopes, sambar, wild boar and monkeys and we can arrange a guided walk into the forest.
Leaving the hills behind descend to Kanam which is surrounded by lush plantation estates, mainly growing rubber trees as well as banana, coffee, pepper, cardamom and papaya. The pace of life is slow and relaxed, and because of the relative lack of traffic it is a great place to explore on a bicycle. Whilst cycling through small country villages you can often see elephants at work on the plantations, clearing and carrying timber under the watchful eye of their mahouts. Stay 2 nights at Vanilla County a calm tranquil farmstead set in a beautiful garden at the foothills of Vagamon.
Onwards to Alleppey where you will board your very own private converted rice barge, for a twenty four hour cruise on the Backwaters. This is a truly peaceful and serene experience, where you can watch the local people go about their daily lives on the water. The rice barge is fully air-conditioned and staffed with on board crew and chef.
After a day of decadence transfer the short distance to the Marari Beach hotel. Located on a stretch of undisturbed golden sand, the Marari Beach Resort is a collection of pretty and spacious cottages scattered around 55 acres of gardens. A great location to kick back with a good book and enjoy four nights of beach time before your flight home from Cochin.
Prices start at £1950 per person including return flights to Cochin, accommodation as above, private transfers and guided sightseeing where applicable. Please call 0207 359 3938 or email Matt and we can put together a tailormade trip of a lifetime
