Stylish stays in Umbria and the Marche

Whilst boutique and contemporary hotels and guesthouses abound in Italy, getting the right balance of old and new can be very difficult. However, we are pleased to say that the owners of the Locanda Palazzone near Orvieto and La Casa in Collina in the Marche hills have achieved this tricky equilibrium with aplomb.

Dating back to the 13th century, the imposing Locanda Palazzone is almost church like, an idea reinforced by the buttressed walls, mullioned windows, and the huge vaulted hall. However, unlike a church, this building is light-filled, cool in summer and warm in winter, and exceptionally comfortable. Guests enter in to the large open space of the vaulted hall, with its luxurious sofas, glass lift, iron central staircase and travertine stone floors, the combination of historic monument and contemporary design setting the tone for the rest of the hotel.

Many guests choose to spend their days by the large swimming pool, maybe driving the short distance to Orvieto in the evening, or perhaps staying in and enjoying the superb locally sourced food accompanied by the Locanda’s own wine.

From the Locanda Palazzone, enjoy a most memorable drive through the Sibillini Mountains to La Casa in Collina. This drive is at its best in June when there are carpets of wild flowers but the scenery is spectacular at any time of year. At the end of this journey you are rewarded with La Casa’s inviting infinity edged-pool with views over the rolling countryside.

It is the owners of our properties that make them special and the success of Peppé and Kim Burelli’s seven room hilltop hideaway is as much about their background as restaurateurs and knowing what customers want, as it is about their skill in transforming a deserted ruin into a contemporary hotel. The lounge areas with their pale tiles, vanilla white furnishings and luxurious sofas, immediately relax the weary traveller. Open brick fireplaces and local shutters balance the modernity, while bedrooms feature bleached beams and cream marble tiles, setting off the dark wood of the extremely comfortable king size beds.

As a balance to the fame of Orvieto, delight in the sleepy hilltop towns which surround La Casa in Collina or head south to Ascoli Piceno, with its splendid Piazza del Popolo. Back at La Casa, quite possibly you won’t want to miss a night of Kim’s cooking, or that of Nello, the couple’s equally hospitable right hand man, who seems never to stop working. Local produce predominates, but with refinements that reflect Kim’s training.
