Borgo San Marco lies in the midst of 90 hectares of ancient olive trees, almond and carob trees, 5km from Fasano and 2km from the sea.
The masseria was originally built in the 15th century and has been owned by the Amati family for the last 200 years. They have restored the property simply so that it has preserved a genuinely historic and rustic atmosphere.
The masseria is set around a large central courtyard with a tower, with stone pillars on one side supporting a canopy providing shade for the outside eating area. The size of the building and its grounds gives the masseria an unequalled sense of space and means that it never feels crowded.
There are rustic features such as the old olive press and drinking troughs in the bar and these together with the authentic restoration, and the fact that it is still a working farm, make Borgo San Marco a unique place to stay.
There are 11 one, two and three room suites and 3 double rooms, all with private bathrooms and all of them different, with the exposed stone walls colour washed in lovely shades of amber and pale terracotta, limestone floors, antique furniture and wooden shutters. All the rooms have air conditioning, but the thick walls and high vaulted ceilings make this unnecessary except for the very hottest days.
The large attractive swimming pool set in the midst of the lovely bougainvillea-filled gardens, a short distance from the main buildings, has an artificial beach at one side which makes it ideal for children.
Meals are usually served outside in the courtyard, but there is a restaurant in the old stable block, which also houses the bar. The food is all locally sourced and the restaurant specialises in local Puglian dishes, making use of the olive oil produced on the farm, which is also on sale.
Borgo San Marco provides an excellent base for seeing this part of Puglia as it is within easy reach of all the well known towns of the area, such as Locorotondo, Martina Franco, Alborobello and the white walled town of Ostuni. Bicycles are provided for exploring the immediate area.
