Castello di Montignano

Castello di Montignano is a magnificent building which dates back to the 10th century, set in wonderful countryside near Massa Martana, about 10km from Todi, in Umbria.

The castle has been renovated to an exceptionally high standard by the present young owners, Giuseppe Alcini and his wife, designer Claudia Bisceglie. Staying here provides a unique experience in that it combines the sense of a medieval hamlet with avante garde design and every conceivable comfort.

The hotel has 12 individually styled rooms and suites, named after previous owners of the castle. Stone walls and wooden floors provide a striking contrast with the combination of simply coloured fabrics of different textures, and antique and restored furniture. The beds are large and comfortable, the bathrooms are spacious and elegant with designer fittings, some with bath and some with shower. Two of the suites are actually apartments with cooking facilities, one with two bedrooms so perfect for a family with young children. The wine bar and breakfast area are enhanced by regularly changing exhibitions of contemporary art.

The castle dungeons have been converted into a luxury Roman spa covering an area of 400m2, directly accessible by lift from the rooms. The spa has a large pool and offers a variety of treatments, from wine baths to ayurvedic massage.

Breakfast is served outside on the terrace or in the courtyard. There is an excellent restaurant where the chef, Marco Clementi, cooks a variety of dishes, his speciality is fish, some traditional to the area and some from further afield, but all using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Outside there are beautiful gardens and a huge swimming pool with luxurious pool furniture, as well as several different areas to sit and enjoy your surroundings. Walk up to the eyrie at the top of the building at sunset for the most spectacular 360 degree view of the Umbrian countryside you are ever likely to see.
