Mandranova

This working olive farm, owned by charming hosts Silvia and Giuseppe, offers a peaceful oasis of warm hospitality in southern Sicily.

With some 10,000 olive trees set on this 50 hectare estate, Giuseppe’s enthusiasm for the family business is infectious and he will be happy to show guests around his farm. Come in autumn to learn more about the harvesting process.

The main house, the casale, offers elegant lounge areas with plenty of beautiful books on the history, landscapes and people of Sicily. Silvia’s delicious cooking, served out on the terrace in summer months, means that most guests do not stray far from the azienda come dinner time. Silvia’s cooking demonstrations prove very popular.

Outside, guests are free to wander through the farm’s extensive gardens dotted with exotic plants, offering plenty of shady spots. The farm’s four friendly dogs can often be found snoozing under one of the many palms trees. The stylish spring-fed swimming pool offers views over the farm towards the sea and has a partly shaded area for those very hot days. Some noise can be heard from the main road but this doesn’t detract from the feeling of tranquillity.

Great thought has been given to the conversion of the farm buildings and the old railway station which now house the 15 spacious bedrooms and suites. They are all individually furnished, some with beautiful antiques and others with flashes of modern art on the walls; all offer modern bathrooms with either shower or bath and some have wonderfully spacious living rooms.

For families or those wanting more privacy, delightful Robazza is a self catering cottage located 300 metres from the main farmhouse. Consisting of 3 bedrooms, two of which are en-suite, the house has its own infinity pool and a terrace with views towards the sea.

Agrigento, with its impressive Greek temples is the obvious attraction in the area, but the perfect antidote to all that history is the miles of fabulous sandy beaches on this stretch of coastline. Soak up the sun at nearby Marina di Palma or head further afield on a day trip in the Mandranova’s own speedboat.
