Located deep in the interior of central Sicily, the Masseria Mandrascate owned and run by the delightful Rosita Prato and her family, offers a wonderful base from which to explore this little-visited but fascinating area of the island. A recent addition to the Real Holidays portfolio, we are sure this will become a firm favourite with our clients!
The Masseria Mandrascate is set down a bumpy, dusty and sunny track with Rosita’s friendly dogs lounging under the trees ready to offer an affectionate welcome. Hidden behind high courtyard walls, there is a guaranteed wow-factor as you step through the front gate into the square to be met with an impressive main building, the odd chicken scratching around and bright splashes of colour from the heavily scented flowers that will turn your head at every corner.
The Masseria is a typical fortified Sicilian farm dating back to the 17th century and produces wheat, olives and grapes as well as produce for the kitchen. The ever welcoming Rosita will show you around enthusiastically, explaining the history of the property, including the methods of harvesting and how the well preserved machinery in the farm museum would have worked. If you’re lucky, she will take you to her wine cellar where she produces one red and one white which are perfect for sipping alongside some antipasti.
The accommodation at the Masseria is set at ground level with individual entrances leading out onto a spacious communal terraced area, which is lovely for sitting out with lunch or for evening drinks. The rooms are all immaculately appointed without compromising the rural, traditional feel of the property. Stone-built and decorated in natural earthy tones, they are cool and airy inside, with a number of personal touches to make you feel at home. Each room has a kitchenette; the standard rooms are spacious and are a pleasure to stay in, whilst the superior rooms and the apartment are much larger, some split level, which we would highly recommend, especially for families.
The pool area is large and has views of the neighbouring fields and Sicilian countryside. There is a pretty garden area to explore, and a wilder area with a few generations of donkeys that Rosita keeps as pets who enjoy nothing more than a carrot, a bit of a stroke and a roll in the dirt.
Just a short drive south from the Masseria brings you to the impressive Roman mosaics of Villa Romana del Casale near Piazza Armerina. Although still undergoing restoration, there is a sufficient display open to the public for this to be well worth a visit. To the north of the Masseria, winding mountain roads take you on a tour through the remote medieval hilltop towns of the region including Enna, Leonforte and Nicosia, with fine scenery all around.
