Hotel Poseidon

On the Amalfi Coast, between the popular tourist towns of Sorrento and Ravello, the Poseidon is positioned high on the cliffs with unrivalled views over the picturesque town of Positano and across the inviting Tyrrhenian Sea.

The hotel dates back over 100 years and has been transformed from a large family villa to a sprawling but elegant hotel with 48 rooms set over 4 floors, while maintaining a family feel and genuine Italian hospitality. The hotel has a number of pretty outdoor spaces to take a quiet moment to read a book or take in the views and there are rooms to suit everyone. We suggest the Funny Rooms at the top of the hotel, with their quirky charm and roof terraces, for couples, and the spacious interconnecting suites are perfect for a younger family. In some corners of the hotels a door can be closed in a corridor to make a mini apartment to create privacy for your clan. Our detailed knowledge of the hotel means we will be able to suggest the best room for you. The majority of rooms boast unrestricted views across the bay, the steep valley of Positano and the colourful stacked up houses of the town.

The hotel is rare in central Positano in that it boasts a good sized pool where many others don’t have the space. It is set on a large terrace with a number of loungers to make the most of a lovely sun trap, and leads off to a slightly more sheltered terrace with colourful plants and flowers climbing across decking and railings. This is the perfect spot for settling down with a good book or enjoying a glass of wine before venturing through the steep slopes and stairs of town to find a tiny trattoria for some fresh Italian food. If moving seems like too much trouble, simply step inside to the hotel’s own renowned restaurant.

Positano is made up of one steep single lane road that winds through the town, with a number of steps and tiny lanes off the main strip. All are lined with shops selling white linen and leather sandals, colourful ceramics and local Limóncello in pretty bottles. There are a number of churches and chapels to visit, although the most impressive is the church of Santa Maria Assunta dating back to the 10th Century. Yellow and green tiles make up the majestic domed roof and there are many Byzantine features including the floor and a once stolen, but soon recovered, Black Madonna.

Positano is ideally situated on the coast, an undemanding drive from Naples with easy access to many other coastal towns. There is limited parking at the hotel but there are a number of places that you can pay to park. If you don’t plan on venturing too far then we will arrange a transfer and you can take out the hotel’s old Beetle to potter around in, or sign up early for the complimentary boat trips the hotel offers and enjoy an idyllic day out at sea.
