Our favourite oasis of comfort on this stretch of Tyrrhenian coast is the Porto Pirgos' new and discreet sister hotel, the Panta Rei.
"Attentive but not intrusive. I heard the phrase used so many times but service at Panta Rei was exactly that. Thanks for revealing this gem to us."
"Just a quick note to say the Panta Rei recommendation was a great success. Very high quality in rooms, food and service, great setting, and we all had a really good time."
Having visited and stayed at architect Adolfo Salabé’s previous hotels, such as the luxurious Porto Pirgos, which many of you have reported back on so positively, I could not help being excited when I first heard about his latest creation, not much more than 1km up this stretch of Calabrian coast. Since being featured in our 2008 portfolio for the first time, we have been very pleased with clients’ feedback over the summer.
The hotel has been positioned on a hillside of pine trees sloping down towards the sea below. Half of the 21 double rooms and suites have been placed harmoniously in this wooded area, which gives them a feeling of privacy. This is increased by the view to the coast below from the large terraces. Above these rooms is the large irregularly shaped pool with its own bar area, and overlooking the pool is the second tier of guest rooms, whose simple wooden exteriors, painted in pastel colours, belie the comfort inside. All rooms have antique furnishings, beamed ceilings, parquet flooring, luxurious bathrooms and a small dressing room. Top of the range is a two bedroom, two bathroom suite with a spacious living room.
The main building of the hotel is built on different levels with the open air restaurant with spectacular sea view at its core. The food is taken seriously here with a menu that ranges from sophisticated dishes that match the stunning setting to the best of simple ‘La Cucina Calabrese’.
While a short hop into Tropea or longer drives to other delightful coastal towns may be on the agenda, we know that many previous guests have not strayed too far from the beach and bar area, reached by a winding, downhill path through the trees to the sea, where there is a second swimming pool.
