Locanda Palazzone is a magnificent medieval building lying on a hill outside Orvieto which has been restored and converted into a luxurious hotel.
There are wonderful views from the terrace, particularly at night, of the Duomo and surrounding buildings. The Palazzone itself is unlike any other converted building in Umbria, in that it is older – dating back to the thirteenth century - and unusually imposing, almost church like, an idea reinforced by the buttressed walls, mullioned windows, and the huge vaulted hall. However, unlike a church, this building is light-filled, cool in summer and warm in winter, and exceptionally comfortable.
Locanda Palazzone is part of an estate owned by the Dubini family who restored other buildings on the estate and planted extensive vineyards which now produce fine Orvieto wines, before turning their attention to the ancient Palazzone, which was originally built by a cardinal and used as a hostel by pilgrims and other travellers on their way to Rome. The restoration was a huge project involving several architects and a long period of time, but the result is a spectacular mix of ancient and modern.
Guests enter in to the large open space of the vaulted hall, with its luxurious sofas, glass lift, iron central staircase and travertine stone floors, the combination of historic monument and contemporary design setting the tone for the rest of the hotel.
There are 7 rooms and suites, all of which are spacious, light and elegant with oak floors, large comfortable beds and luxurious bathrooms with showers and deliciously scented Bulgari bath products. Most of the rooms are split level with the bed in a loft space and the high windows looking out onto the wonderful Umbrian landscape with Orvieto in the distance. The furnishings are mainly white and cream with contrasting touches of colour and some antique furniture.
The large swimming pool is surrounded by delphiniums, roses, chestnut trees and the estate’s vineyard, and enjoys the same magnificent views as the Locanda itself. Many guests choose to spend their days here, maybe driving the short distance to Orvieto in the evening, or maybe staying in and enjoying the superb locally sourced food accompanied by the Locanda’s own wine.
3 junior suites, 1 double suite, the Cardinal suite, 1 family suite sleeping up to 4, and 1 family apartment, also for 4.
