Dolphin's Leap has a wonderful location perched on the far corner above Lefokastro’s sandy beach with dramatic views across the gulf where the regular spotting of dolphins has given the house its name.
The still very Greek seaside hamlet of Lefokastro sits just the other side of the small wooded headland with its tranquil bay lined by a crescent of twenty houses and three tavernas.
This is the first time we have been witness to the gestation of such a stunning villa and we have watched Pippa and Nick Dale-Harris make sure that this would be one of the finest newly-constructed stone built houses in the area. The views from this west facing coast must rival any Greece has to offer so the owners have placed considerable emphasis on the stone paved terraces providing different spaces for outdoor lounging, and taking advantage of those idyllic seascapes. One first floor terrace area forms part of the central structure that links the two elements of the main house , while a more open pool terrace leads away to the more secluded one bedroom ‘Writer’s Retreat’ which has an open plan living area and ensuite galleried bedroom.
The cleverly placed 9m x 4m infinity pool makes the most of this frontage with the sandy beach just a two minute walk below. Their aim to engineer a building that would blend naturally with the contours of the hillside and surrounding olive groves gives the small estate a lovely feeling of being part of the natural world surrounding it.
The main complex is divided into two separate wings which are interconnected by an open terrace at first floor level and a large internal room at ground floor level. All bedrooms have sea views and air conditioning. In the west wing there are two double bedrooms each with ensuite bathroom on the first floor, whilst on the ground floor is a large open plan kitchen, dining room and living area which is fully equipped to cater for large parties of people. The east wing has the third and fourth bedrooms which share a family bathroom at first floor level, and on the ground floor is an apartment style area with ensuite bathroom, kitchen and living area. Adjacent to this is a large, bright open room with cloakroom which is fully air conditioned and can be closed off to provide additional sleeping space, perfect for teenagers, and allows a degree of independence for two families taking the whole property. The separate dwelling, the Writer’s Retreat, provides a haven of peace with further accommodation for two people.
While the owners have used local materials throughout, the quality of the furnishing, tiling and flooring stems from their dedication to producing a comfortable and contemporary home as much as their wish to reflect the traditional style of the area. Three kitchens, one larger one with Smeg oven and a big fridge freezer bear testament to their recognition that families or groups renting a villa of this quality expect to be able to produce memorable al fresco meals even if the nearest taverna is no more than a ten minutes’ walk away.
