Walking in Naxos

Naxos is the largest and in many ways the most interesting of the Cycladic islands. The variety of the landscape, a combination of lovely sandy beaches, a mountainous interior, green fertile valleys and white terraced villages makes it a wonderful place for walking.

"Our walk across Naxos and back in early October was fascinating, adventurous and often breathtakingly beautiful- taking in mountainous mule-paths with Bonelli's eagles circling above us, abandoned eighteenth-century monastery gardens,  marble mines, a wonderful temple of Demeter, and much more".

A network of traditional mule tracks and hidden valley paths will take you to remote and beautiful places you would never otherwise see, allowing you to experience Greek landscape and culture at its best.
The walks and accommodation are arranged by people who know the area intimately and who will recommend the best tavernas and local shops.

Below is an example of a self-guided walk in Naxos. Departures are at any time to suit you from April to June, or in September and October, when the weather is not too hot and the flowers are at their best. Accommodation throughout will be in simple but attractive small hotels and village rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Breakfast is included in the cost.

Day 1: Met at Naxos port or airport and taken to accommodation
Day 2: Walk over high farmland with wonderful views of coastal plain and neighbouring islands via a ruined Byzantine church in a citrus grove, to steep-stacked villages fed by streams
Day 3: From a village in a vale of olives, up a zig-zag marble path to a mountain summit and  a 365-degree view of islands and sea
Day 4: Traditional paths lead via farmed terraces and woodland to a remote chapel with faded frescos and a rugged ex-mining landscape, then descends, with spectacular coastal views, to a miniature port
Day 5: Free day
Day 6: Climb to the peak of the highest mountain in the Cyclades with views of the Minor Cyclades, visit a fortified monastery and abandoned terraces rich in wildflowers
Day 7: Walk through the island’s rural and a valley flanked by soaring imestone cliffs to the Classical temple of Demeter
Day 8: Depart Naxos
