It’s rare for a young couple with little experience of anything to do with hotels to get so much right in their first venture but Lee and Amelia Thornley have created a luxury rural retreat that makes you think it must have been there for hundreds of years, with that level of discreet service which means you know you are being looked after without being particularly conscious of the fact.
Just a ten minute drive north of surprisingly fashionable Vejer, itself half way along the Costa de Luz, and an attractive mix of authentic hilltop ‘pueblo blanco’ and poshed up whitewashed patios and squares, the seven bedroom Casa hotel is surrounded by rolling hills that take on a wonderful light as the sun sets on the distant horizon. The recreated farmhouse balances its contemporary comforts with a country house elegance in the large main hall and sitting room that is echoed in the three spacious double rooms and four suites. These combine fabulous views and a creative balance of stripped reclaimed wooden shutters and doors and unpainted plaster walls, with colourful cushions and throws, and the finest Egyptian cotton sheets on the king and superking size beds. A more modern two bedroom self-catering casita with its own pool offers a greater degree of privacy.
For many it is the cloistered courtyards and lavender and jasmine scented gardens with carefully created areas where you can literally take your siesta, which provide the restoration of body and soul that the owners have made key to the whole concept of their ambitious project. It would be very difficult to move from the large pool, but with the long sandy surfing beaches and fish restaurants at El Palmar fifteen minutes away, and less well known small towns like Medina Sidonia, a bit further inland to discover, you will inevitably stray from this Andalucian Eden. You will however, be drawn back by the dinner offered five times a week with simple but inventive dishes such as a wonderful chicken tagine with almonds and a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate tart. And for many people, a late, indolent breakfast of sliced fruit with yoghurt and granola, little pots of chopped avocado and tomato, cheese and local olive oil rules out any need for lunch.
For those for whom effortless style, light and airy spaces, a sense of peace and contentment, and views to match your fino are all important you’ll find it very difficult to leave this wonderful, ‘no need to do anything’ paradise.
