For the first time visitor with a couple of weeks to spare, we suggest you begin your journey in Siem Reap, the base for exploring the famed temples of Angkor Wat. While here hire a bike, throw a packed lunch into your basket and set off for a day of exploration. And to escape the crowds then head to Beng Melea, a secluded and un-restored temple, 40km from Siem Reap.
Once you are templed out then head to Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, before hitching a ride on a boat down the Mekong and into Vietnam. Arriving in the heart of Vietnam’s rice producing region you can observe ‘real’ life on the river before journeying to Ho Chi Minh.
A few days in Vietnam’s largest city allows time to explore the famous museums and markets, take a cyclo ride near the Saigon River and visit the Cu Chi Tunnels – the underground labyrinth of mazes used by the Viet Cong soldiers.
From Ho Chi Minh begin your journey north, taking in the former royal capital Hue, the ancient port town of Hoi An and the Cham Ruins of My Son – all these destinations boast Unesco Heritage status and are great places to immerse yourself in the country’s culture and history. In Hue board the Reunification Express and take an overnight train journey arriving in the capital Hanoi early in the morning. You need at least 2 days in Hanoi but with more time you can go trekking in Sapa or board an overnight cruise around Halong Bay.
For beach lovers we can add in a few days on the island of Phu Quoc, one of Asia’s least developed islands, and for those with more time then consider starting in Laos. Whatever your requirements this fascinating region is sure to have something to offer.
