The east coast islands of Malaysia have been known to the diving and backpacking fraternity for years but with improved transport connections there is no reason why you can't discover the island paradise that is Pulau Perhentian.
The journey there will take you via Kuala Lumpur, which has some of the regions best shopping, before taking an internal flight onto Kota Bharu - a mainstay of traditional Malay culture. Whilst an overnight here is unavoidable it does give you the opportunity to sample some local cuisine at one of the best night markets in the country.
Agreed it does seem a lengthy journey but then this is why the Perhentian Islands are arguably the most beautiful islands in Malaysia and, once there, you will find yourself walking on white sand beaches and swimming in crystal-clear aquamarine water teeming with tropical fish. Accommodation options are limited to simple resorts with comfortably furnished, individual wooden chalets, but you can still expect air conditioning, a comfortable bed and, in our opinion, an unrivalled beach location.
Activities on the islands include snorkelling and diving, the occasional jungle walk or just lying on the beach, good book in hand, waiting for the coconuts to drop.
Quiet, remote and beautiful the Perhentian Islands are a must see for any self respecting beach junkie....
