Jordan’s capital city, Amman, is a fascinating combination of old and new, with modern buildings, hotels and restaurants in the business area contrasting with the much older downtown city with its traditional shops selling everything from fabulous jewellery to everyday household items. From Amman you can easily visit the desert castles and the ancient city of Jerash, one of the ten great Roman cities of the Decapolis and an unsung glory of the Middle East.
A short drive south down the King’s Highway to Madaba ‘City of the Mosaics’, an optional side trip to Mount Nebo where Moses saw the Promised Land, and a last stop at the Crusader stronghold of Karak, earns you three nights (and you need that long) at the holy grail of Petra, quite rightly taking its place as one of the new seven wonders of the world. Whether entering the Siq at dawn or climbing among the tombs and temples, the experience cannot fail to fire your imagination.
Nearby Wadi Rum, where much of Lawrence of Arabia was filmed and the Bedouin have lived for years, now offers the opportunity for a night under the stars, while the Dana Nature Reserve provides a magical experience for those wanting a more active holiday. And because the Red Sea resort of Aqaba is still in the throes of large scale tourist development, we suggest you slow down and take it easy at one of the excellent hotels on the Dead Sea, physically and culturally refreshed for your return.
