Cities such as Quito and Cuenca set up in the Andes offer museums, theatres, art and restored colonial mansions. Close to Quito there are the colourful markets such as Otavalo, Saquisili and Cotacachi leather markets.
South of Quito you can enjoy the magnificent scenery along the Valley of the Volcanoes via Cotapaxi National Park, home to llamas, Andean pumas, deer and the orange faced falcon, leading down to Riobamba and Cuenca, including the famous Devils Nose train journey. To the east, you can stay in a jungle ecolodge, deep in the Amazonian jungle, where you can see the abundance of wildlife and birds. There are over 100 species of mammals and birds in the Amazon including macaws, toucans, rare kingfishers, tapirs, the three toed sloth and two species of freshwater dolphin.
The highlight of any trip to Ecuador would be a visit to the Galapagos Islands. These islands form a unique eco system which will offer close encounters with some of the most spectacular wildlife on land and in water. The diverse range of animals found on these remote islands is staggering, from seals lazing on sandy beaches to marine iguanas sun bathing to the comical looking blue footed boobies doing their mating dance.
Accommodation ranges from country haciendas, restored colonial boutique hotels, lodges in the Amazon and boats of varying sizes in the Galapagos.
