Family Adventure to South Africa

It's tough being a travel agent and having to try out holidays for our prospective customers, but in the pursuit of research on your behalf I have taken two safaris in the school summer holidays with my teenage children.

This taught me how excited and involved children of all ages become when seeing animals in the wild, and how when combined with a great beach, everyone comes back energised for the year ahead.

Our favourite trip was a self-drive itinerary on the eastern side of South Africa. We went in August which together with July tends to be the best month for seeing game around the Kruger Park, and then we moved on to relax on an empty beach on the Kwazulu Natal Indian Ocean coast.

This two week holiday combining the game viewing in the Kruger Park and Swaziland with time on the beach, return flights and car hire and all meals starts from £6000 for a family of four with two adults and two children under 12.

Days 1 -2 Fly to Johannesburg and collect a car to stay two nights at Rissington Inn in Hazyview.  Explore Pilgrims Rest and Blyde River Canyon.

Days 3-6 Spend the next three nights at Djuma Bush Lodge in the Sabi Sand Wildlife Reserve.

Days 7-9 Enter the Kruger Park to spend two nights at one of the state rest camps taking slow game drives through the park.

Days 10 Leave Kruger Park to enter Swaziland to stay in a stone cottage at Mkhaya Game Reserve. See black Rhino in the wild.

Days 11-13 Drive south into Kwazulu Natal to spend three nights in a treehouse at the Rocktail Bay Lodge on the Indian Ocean

Day 14 Drive south to Richards Bay for connecting flight through Johannesburg to London. (Mon-Fri only).
