Split between Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, Borneo is known for its rich biodiversity with a wilderness of ancient rainforests and mountain ranges. But there is also a wealth of tribal culture, sublime tropical islands and world class diving and is perfect for a family holiday or a romantic honeymoon.
Start your trip flying into Kota Kinabulu and collect a speedboat over to the Gayana Eco Lodge, a coral island nestled off the coast of Borneo for a three night stay in an stilted over water villa. The reef here is rich and colourful, and you can do your part for coral conservation whilst getting up close to some vibrant giant clams at the same time. The Shangri La Rasa Ria on the mainland is the ideal next stop for three nights. Set on a pristine white beach and surrounded by hectares of protected rainforest and nature reserve, guides from the hotel can take you on canopy walks into the rainforest and out to see the majestic and endangered Orangutan without compromising the luxury of your accommodation.
For the more adventurous, take up the challenge of climbing Mt Kinabalu for the remarkable view from the summit as the sun rises over the South China Sea. On the climb down you will have more time and enthusiasm to admire the flora of this diverse national park
Your next stop is Sandakan, where you will visit the Sepilok Nature Reserve and onward to see pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, hornbills and a host of other wildlife on the Kinabatangan River. You’ll travel up the river with a knowledgeable private guide, stopping for lunch and onward to your accommodation, the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. Here you will spend two nights, giving you the chance to trek around this area and explore the Gomantong caves and meet the locals and pick up trinkets in the Abai Water Village.
One last jungle boat journey takes you out of the rainforest and over to the jetty to collect your speedboat over to Lankayan island. A blissful tiny island retreat in the Sulu sea, with 23 beach bungalows, reef off the beach and white sand around. Lankayan Island is A paradise for nature lovers. Whale Sharks migrate past from March to May and you will have a good chance to spot baby Green Turtles and Hawksbill Turtle hatching and making their journey across the beach to the sea from June- September.
To break up the journey back to the UK we recommend you have a night or two in Traders, Kuala Lumpur. Boasting fantastic city views and within close proximity of the Petronas towers and the Chinese markets, you can finish your trip off with some shopping and city life.
