Learn to be a Mahout in Northern Thailand

There have got to be few feel good activities that rank higher than spending three days interacting with a herd of Elephants. We’re not recommending you sit on an elephant for an hour while it trundles around a tourist trail before returning to its unfortunate shackles and this is certainly not anything that we would endorse. We are talking about getting to know the elephants. Getting involved. Feeding, washing and playing with them. You can even train as a family, or a couple, to be mahouts. You’ll learn commands to control the elephant while you sit behind his ears, pat the rough skin on his head, and bat away his inquisitive trunk as he asks you for more bananas.

The Anantara Golden Triangle high up on the Burma, Laos and Thailand borders offers just this and it’s a great place to take the family for a completely unique and memorable holiday. The hotel is around a 90 minutes drive from the airport of Chiang Rai, although if you prefer we can mix the transfer up a little with a drive, a ride on a longtail boat and arriving at the hotel by yep, Elephant.

The hotel itself is modern with Thai and Asian influence running throughout  and set in the heart of the jungle with plenty of opportunities to venture out wildlife spotting and learning forest living skills.  For the active among you we suggest you kayak the Mekong, and for the culture vultures we can prearrange a trip out to the northern hill tribes where you can see traditional Thai and Burmese families, how they live and enjoy their colourful clothes and gentle smiles. You can also learn how to take the taste of Thailand home with you on a cookery course, immerse yourself in the tranquil feel of Northern Thailand with a spot of yoga and the spa, or simply relax by the swimming pool.

We would then recommend one of Thailands famous beaches. With so many to choose from, we can recommend one that will be perfect for you.

For 5 nights at the Anantara including flights and transfers, prices start at £1,250pp. Please call on 0207 359 3938 or email if the idea of a holiday in Northern Thailand blows your away. We also have lots of other family holidays worldwide.
