A treasure trove of natural delights await the visitor to Costa Rica, from the famous images of green frogs and turtles, to the volcanoes and lush natural parks, not to mention the miles of beaches. All of this variety makes it a perfect holiday destination for the more intrepid family, and it is well suited to self driving.
Fly into the capital San Jose and transfer to your hotel. The city is worth a brief exploration to discover the lavish National Theatre and the underground Pre-Columbian Gold Museum. Spend 2 nights here and take a day trip through lush coffee cultivation regions to Poas Volcano.
Next you will be transferred by road and boat to Tortuguero National Park, on the Caribbean coast, staying for 2 nights on full board at Mawamba Lodge. Daily wildlife safaris with the lodge’s naturalist are included, with the chance to spot iguanas, white-faced monkeys and black river turtles.
After the short flight back to San Jose it is time to pick up your 4WD car and head north to the Arenal Volcano region for 3 nights at Arenal Observatory Lodge. Stay in a volcano view room and spot lava flowing forth in the evening from the safety of your balcony. Here you can also visit the hot springs, nearby waterfall, hike, mountain bike and spot birds and monkeys from the Arenal hanging bridges before heading to Monteverde Cloud Forest for more wildlife spotting or adventure activities.
Drive south to the mid-Pacific coast at beautiful Manuel Antonio National Park, where you can spend 3 nights in one of the hotels on the beach close to the park entrance. See some of Costa Rica’s most beautiful scenery along a series of headlands where the breakers wash up to the rainforest which teems with sloths, iguanas, monkeys and parrots. You will have time to hike, enjoy the beaches as well as rafting or kayaking before returning to San Jose for your flight home.
For a 10 night self drive trip around Costa Rica, with flights, all accomodation, car hire, and even a few excursions prices start at £1,950 per person, based on a family of four.
