Knowledge of India’s wildlife is often limited to the tiger, the largest cat (for those still wondering, a tiger will beat a lion in a fight, every time). Although this helps in generating much needed income to help with the preservation of the species (threatened not only by poachers but also land encroachment) it is doing the country a great disservice. Although it is fair to say that you will not get the same experience of a safari in India as you would in Africa’s larger and better managed parks, the vast reaches of the country, north to south provides terrain suitable for a huge diversity of interesting wildlife, some more elusive even than the Tiger. In the high Himalaya plateau of Ladakh the snow leopard was famously tracked by a BBC wildlife team for over 3 weeks before they captured remarkable and unique footage of it hunting. Did you know that there are over 1200 recorded species of resident and migratory birds in the country? You will also find the endangered Asian One-horned Rhino hiding out in the northeastern parks of Assam. Gir in Gujarat is the last outpost of the Asian Lion.
The lodges are improving too with a wide choice of styles, from luxury tented camps such as Banjar Tola in Khana, cottages at Forsyth’s Lodge, Satpura, converted royal hunting lodges such as Sariska Palace in Rajasthanand everything in between. And you are not restricted to traditional game drives by jeep either. You can have the ultimate safari experience in many of the parks by taking an elephant back safari. A couple of the parks also provide walking safaris. Satpura in the central state of Madhya Pradesh is the latest to offer these and you do have a good chance of coming across some dangerous creatures like the sloth bear. Periyar in the hills of Kerala in the south has been offering day walks as well as overnight camping trips for some years now and this is a great way to get close to herds of wild Elephant.
