The Big Five and wild dogs in Kenya

Kenya is an ideal safari destination. It has such varied landscapes throughout the country for perfect animal and bird viewing, and is home to the iconic Samburu and Masai cultures, as well as the Great Migration.

The well known Masai Mara of course should be included in all itineraries to Kenya, but also visiting the quieter and less visited areas of Laikipia, Lewa, Samburu and the Matthews Range will add to the overall enjoyment of your safari holiday. These areas harbour more endangered species than anywhere else in East Africa including Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s hartebeest and wild dog. Many northern species are found here including reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx and gerenuk. Laikipia is dominated by privately owned farms which today undertake a mixture of both wildlife and farming activities. The habitat is varied, open grassland and mixed savannah in the eastern areas, and rocky and drier bush in the north west areas. There are quite a few conservancies in the region as well, such as Lewa and Ol Pejeta, which is home to a Chimpanzee sanctuary and a rhino sanctuary.

Instead of just the usual game drives in land rovers and jeeps, walking and camel safaris are popular. You can also track the rare wild dog from some of the safari camps. To see a pack a 15 or so wild dogs follow a dic dic can be an exhilarating highlight of any trip, and to then see the remains – or lack of – less than a minute after the kill, is quite incredible.

Community projects are also very important in many areas including a lovely camp called Sarara Camp located in the Namunyak Community Concession in the Matthews Range which has been given to the local Samburu people and has six very comfortable tents and is close to the well know Singing Wells in the Namunyak area. Game drives, walks, day hikes, climbing or overnight camel safaris can all be arranged here.
Accommodation ranges from lodges overlooking Ewaso Nyiro River to temporary tented camps in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and tented lodges with private plunge pools in each tent.

We all love to curl up with a good book on holiday. For holiday reading suggestions, take a look through our Reading List. We recommend Flame Trees of Thika by Elspeth Huxley.
