  • Perfectly located and unique hotel in the bohemian city of Bologna

City hotels don’t come much better located than the Al Cappello Rosso, perfectly placed for the Centro Storico, just 45 metres from the Piazza Magiore which is flanked by imposing Rennaissance palazzos and the city’s Basilica di San Petronio. But then it has been there since 1375 with the "Red Hat" in the hotel's name referring to the headgear of the 14th century tradesmen who stayed there then. Perhaps difficult to believe when you go inside as the hotel was totally renovated in 2011 with an almost minimalist style giving little hint of its past.

The 32 bedrooms are spread over the 4 floors of this historic building and have different designs reflecting modern artistic themes associated with the city ranging from fashion to dance. Each room offers every facility you might need such as king-sized beds, LCD televisions and complimentary Wi-Fi. The hotel also has five apartments in another building 45 metres away, also well-equipped and with a kitchenette.

The hotel makes an ideal starting point for wandering off into the tangle of arcades and medieval streets where you may queue for home-made mortadella and perfect looking cheeses as much as for fashionable clothes. As one of Europe’s first university towns Bologna has that same feeling that its contemporaries like Oxford share, the buzz of youthful culture, and an impressive selection of museums and art collections. And when you are in danger of becoming overwhelmed by seeing so many works by Tintoretto, Titian, Giotto and Carracci, you always have the Bolognese love of the evening and night hours to embrace for yourself, and can look forward to a dinner of delicious tortellini and Bolognese ragu accompanied by local sangiovese red wine knowing you have the comfort of the Al Cappello Rosso to walk home to.
