Baglio Fontanasalsa

Baglio Fontanasalsa is a working agriturismo situated in the countryside 8km from Trapani in Western Sicily.

The owner, Maria Caterina Burgarella, has restored this family property to provide the perfect combination of hospitality and authentic agricultural production.

The rooms are in the restored farmhouse, some overlooking the very attractive central "baglio" or courtyard, with its original stone floor, and the others leading onto the pretty orange grove, in the middle of which is a single ancient olive tree.

The agriturismo has been restored very authentically, using the original materials wherever possible. The vaulted roof in the dining room was rebuilt from the repaired original beams, and there is a large room, sometimes used for family parties, containing old agricultural equipment.

There are 9 rooms, all different from each other and all named after varieties of olives inspired by the acres of olive trees surrounding the farm, which are its main source of produce. The rooms are mostly double, but two have bunk beds and would be suitable for children, and one, famous because President Ciampi stayed there a few years ago, has a fireplace and is larger than the others, so can accommodate extra beds.

All the rooms are traditionally furnished but extremely comfortable. The large swimming pool is set amongst the olive and orange trees and there are several outside seating areas. There is the baglio itself, where breakfast is eaten under the pergola, a dining area overlooking the orange grove, and various balconies as you go upstairs. These have wonderful views over the surrounding countryside and towards the sea on one side, and the ancient Etruscan hilltop town of Erice on the other.

Baglio Fontanasalsa is famous for its award winning olive oil, but it also produces its own wine, and the food is delicious, much of it home grown or sourced locally. The agriturismo is in an ideal position for visiting the archaeological sites of Segesta and Salinunte, Erice, Trapani, where you can get a boat to the Egadi Islands, and the lovely beach at Vito Lo Capo.
