Cycle Coast to Coast

We are delighted to have joined up with a specialist cycling company, Bike Greece, so that we can arrange mountain bike holidays for all abilities on the Greek mainland and the island of Evia, coast to coast. Why not reward yourself for a week of keeping fit with a week of recuperation at our country house Metochi in the Pelion?

Our week long cycling holidays are fully supported mountain bike adventures with lots of history, culture and tradition. There are two levels, blue and red. On the blue level, previous bike experience is unnecessary. You will bike approximately 3 hours per day on mainly dirt tracks and some quiet tarmac roads, with lots of time for viewing historical sights, swimming, and leisurely lunches. The red level is aimed at mountain bikers with previous experience who are looking for a more challenging ride. The itinerary is 7 days / 6 nights and will be as follows:

  • Day 1 Sunday Arrive at Athens airport. Meet and transfer to Villla Patricia (35 min). Explore the former grounds of the Greek Royal family, now a national park, set in fantastic landscape with newly created bike paths. Bathe in fresh water springs at Varibobi. Welcome barbeque at Villa Patricia, with complimentary drinks, swim in the pool, sauna, brief on the week ahead and sort bikes. Transfer to hotel.
  • Day 2 Monday, Descend to cave of Pan, remains of 4 C BC terracotta lamps can still be seen. Onward to our most Westerly location, Phyli and the rarely visited 5th century BC fortress, guarding the strategic pass into Attica from Boetia.
  • Day 3 Tuesday Check out of hotel and head eastward to Marathon Lake, the village of Marathon and the site of the Persian landings at Marathon Bay in 5th century BC. Have a taverna lunch and then explore beautiful and tranquil Rhamnous, a lovely little known 6th century BC sanctuary and temple. Cross by ferry to the fishing village of Stira, on the island of Evia, gin and tonics on the patio watching the sun set. We dine by the sea and sample some lovely local wine.
  • Day 4 Wednesday, Rest day by the sea. Optional self guided mountain bike ride to Neboriou Bay and spend the day on one of the prettiest beaches in Greece. Alternatively climb to the mysterious dragon houses on the foothills of Mount Kilousi. Windsurf, scuba dive, or charter a fishing boat and have lunch prepared for you on a deserted island.
  • Day 5 Thursday, Early morning bus ride to Karistos. Friendly villages and stone hamlets and have lunch on the coast. We climb to 1,200 metres on Mount Ochi and enjoy some superb mountain biking as we descend down a 10 Km valley, rich in chestnut, walnut and pine trees, to the Aegean sea, our most easterly point at the foot of the Dimosari Gorge. Spend time at our mountain lodge at Kalianou.
  • Day 6 Friday, Dramatic coastal ride for the "reds". The "blues" trek up the magnificent Dimosari gorge and lunch in the mountains. There are great views of the straights of Petaloi, the 13th century AD Crusade castle of "Castello Rosso" and the Roman aqueduct below us, as we drop to the Gulf of Evia. Trek (35 min) to a 2nd century AD Roman quarry full of abandoned marble columns. Rejoin bikes, and sweep down to the fishing village of Karistos and the ocean. Time for a swim in the sea and then catch the ferry to Rafina and transfer to Athina. Visit the ancient temples, paths, walkways, and parks as the sun sets, a great way to take in the wonderful sights of the golden age of Athens. Evening meal and overnight in Athens.
  • Day 7, Saturday Check out and transfer to Athens airport (30 minutes) Accommodation will be in 4 different locations, and the chosen hotels are clean with hot showers and plenty of character.
