Located in the unspoilt countryside of Northern Umbria, Borgo Il Poeta was formerly the site of one of the watch towers which stood along the Tuscan/Umbrian border. Today, the remnants of the 16th century tower and the hamlet surrounding it have been integrated into a collection of 6 elegant country houses.
This corner of Umbria has a wealth of places to visit; the hilltop towns of Montone and Gubbio, San Sepolcro, the birthplace of the artist Piero della Francesca, and the lovely town of Citta di Castello are all close by.
Borgo Il Poeta is the perfect place for guests to get away from it all and relax. The property overlooks the Tiber Valley to the front, and all the houses have views of fields and forested hillsides, which come alive with colour, particularly in the early summer when the sunflowers are in bloom. The layout of the property is such that if you want privacy you can find it, but there are also opportunities to socialise with fellow guests, making it ideal for families, honeymooners or groups of friends. At the heart of Borgo Il Poeta is a courtyard with lovely views overlooking the countryside.
The swimming pool is just below the gardens and guests are provided with pool towels. There is also a tennis court, croquet lawn and an area for practising your skills at bocce, and the surrounding countryside has many trails for enthusiastic walkers.
All 6 houses have been furnished to a very high standard, with comfortable sofas and armchairs in the living areas, antique furniture throughout and modern tiled bathrooms with either bath or shower. The kitchens all have hob, oven, fridge freezer and dishwasher, as well as all necessary kitchen equipment.
All houses are stocked with wine and products which are made at Borgo Il Poeta, and are paid for on consumption. By prior arrangement, an evening meal can be provided for the day of arrival. Fresh bread can be delivered to the house by agreement with Simona, the housekeeper at Borgo Il Poeta, and she is always on hand to help with any day to day queries.
Each house has its own private outside seating area, with tables and chairs suitable for al fresco dining.
Two of the houses are detached and ideal for couples, whilst the other four are all located in the central building, where the thick stone walls ensure total privacy and also keep the houses cool in the summer months.
La Casetta is the smallest and most private of the houses as it is set slightly apart from the others. The living room has wooden beamed ceilings and stone floors and leads through an archway into the small dining area and kitchen. The large bedroom has an antique iron bed, which can be made up as a twin or double and an en suite bathroom with shower.
Although Casa Santa Lucia is for 2 people, it has plenty of space. The entrance is at the rear of the house where there is a large expanse of lawn with outdoor furniture. The comfortable living room has an enormous picture window overlooking the countryside. The en suite bedroom has a four poster canopy bed. Stairs lead down from the living room to the kitchen, dining room and outdoor seating area.
Casa Monte’s large, cool hallway leads through to the dining room and kitchen, beyond which French doors lead out onto the central courtyard. On the 1st floor you will find the bright and airy sitting room, a double bedroom and a study. The master bedroom, with an iron four poster bed, is on the 2nd floor. This room has its own private terrace with wonderful views towards Montone and an en suite bathroom with separate WC. An en suite twin bedroom is also on this floor.
Casa Torre is built around the original watchtower. The ground floor has a living room, dining area and kitchen and private seating in the garden. On the first floor there is an en suite master bedroom with an iron bed and wooden floor, a study, a twin room and a bathroom.
Casa Loggia has a lot of stairs as it is built on an incline, so all the rooms are on different levels, giving it great character. The living room leads down to a large dining room with fireplace and a separate small kitchen. There is a large double bedroom with king size four poster canopy bed and en suite bathroom. An en suite twin room is also on this floor. Another double bedroom is on the 2nd floor and has sweeping views over the countryside. The private seating area for Casa Loggia is set slightly apart from the house, behind the chapel.
Casa Tettoia is the largest of the houses at Borgo Il Poeta and is really very special. The grand entrance hall leads to a large living area, with armchairs and sofas at one end and a piano at the other, beyond which are French doors leading out onto the courtyard with a large wooden table. The dining room, the large kitchen and a twin/double bedroom, lead off from the living room. All these rooms have direct access to the terrace which runs along the front of the house. Upstairs there is a twin and double bedroom, both en suite, and the final double bedroom is on the second floor, facing the front of the property and enjoying the view over the Tiber Valley.
