France

Real Holidays' self-catering properties are located in the two southern regions of France, Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence. Both these areas are perfect for family holidays. With miles of fine sandy beaches, a hinterland rising up the foothills of the Massif Central and the Pyrenees, Languedoc-Roussillon is a land full of character, stretched out under almost permanent sunshine. Profoundly influenced by the Mediterranean, Languedoc-Roussillon shares a border with Spain as far as the Rhône delta. Its long beaches alternate with wild lagoons which are a paradise for flamingos.

The region has 300 days of sunshine annually - all in beautiful natural surroundings with monuments, characterful villages and towns such as Montpellier, Nîmes, Carcassonne, Uzès and the Pont du Gard (four sites included on the Unesco World Heritage list) stretching back to prehistoric, Roman or Cathar times. In the hinterland, charm and authenticity have been extensively preserved.

The Haut Languedoc and Cévennes nature reserves and the wooded slopes of Cerdagne are always popular with hikers. This colourful country also produces fine wines, and of course there's the fabulous and varied local cuisine! Provence is a land of light, vines and olive groves. With its feet in the Mediterranean and its head in the Alps, Provence has an extensive palette of colourful landscapes. The road from the High Alps descends from Briançon towards the Lake Serre-Ponçon or the Gorges du Verdon.

Once past Mont Ventoux, the Lubéron and its lavender fields, you reach the sea, its calanques (coves), Saint Tropez and the Iles du Levant. Stroll through landscapes reminiscent of Cézanne and Picasso or let yourself be swallowed up by the beauty of the Camargue on horseback. There are so many ways of getting away from it all: music in Aix-en-Provence, theatre in Avignon, history in Arles, Orange or the Var on the trail of the Romans.
