Le Silve
Le Silve di Armenzano is a beautifully restored farmhouse, set in peaceful countryside in the wooded hills near Assisi, which had been converted into an extremely comfortable hotel with self catering apartments nearby.
Le Silve is one of Real Holidays' favourite hotels, not least due to its stunning location. It is equidistant from Assisi and Spello, along narrow country roads through the forested slopes of Mount Subasio. The hotel, originally a 10th century Inn, is situated on top of a hill, on one of the lower slopes of the mountain. We first stayed there in October, when the array of autumn colours rivalled anything that New England has to offer.
This inn has been restored to a very high standard, whilst retaining the features of its old stone walls, wooden beams and worn terracotta tiled floors. The large bedrooms are stylish, with thoughtfully chosen antique furniture and well equipped bathrooms. There are several lounges throughout the bedroom areas, which add to the feeling of space and relaxation.
A separate, equally elegant building, in the landscaped gardens is home to a large comfortable bar and restaurant. The fine dining relies on local produce with handmade pasta and traditional Umbrian cooking. Guests staying at Le Silve have access to the surrounding national park, which provides some lovely walking terrain in natural parklands, where deer and sheep roam free. For days spent at the hotel, aside from plenty of spots from which to enjoy the panoramic views of the woodlands, there is also a swimming pool and a tennis court. Horse riding and quad bikes are available from the hotel, but the beautiful countryside and accessible culture should keep most people content.
Le Selve and Basaletto
If Le Silve seems remote, drive on another 1200m and 3000m respectively to the two farmhouses that the hotel offers on a self catering basis. Each attractive old building is in a spectacular position. At Le Selve there are 4 apartments sleeping 2 to 4 people. Two od the apartments have an adjoining door which makes them ideal for families. There are 7 apartments at Basaletto, also sleeping 2 to 4 people. They are comfortable and well furnished and have been converted to retain their simple traditional Umbrian feel. Both have private outdoor areas for eating and sitting out and Basaletto has its own swimming pool. Guests staying at Le Selve can use the new large swimming pool located a few minutes' drive from the apartments with glorious views of Mt Subasio. Both farmhouses have access to the facilities of the hotel, including the restaurant.
