Hotel Villa delle Meraviglie
The pretty hill village of Maratea is the Positano of Basilicata's short stretch of west coast, but at half the price.
Below the alleys and 44 churches of the old town, the corniche road looks down on the attractive Porto di Maratea and its chic neighbour, Fiumicello. 2km along the road towards the sleepy village and beaches of Aquafreda is the definitely ‘superior’ three star Villa delle Meraviglie. In choosing a hotel for this region, our priority as usual was a friendly owner, and Paola, whose family owns this elegant small hotel, fits the bill perfectly.
The light Mediterranean design of the building is enhanced by the outside terraces and breakfast area, which overlook the wooded hillside gardens and pathways leading down to the sea, and the hotel’s own rocky cove below. Many guests don’t move far from the two swimming pools, one of which is for children.
The hotel appeals to couples and families alike and babysitting can easily be arranged. Snacks are served both by the pool in high season and from the bar at lunchtime and in the evening.
The bedrooms are modern, light and all have bathrooms with showers. 9 have a sea view and terrace, although the views are partially obscured by the trees. The superior rooms, both in the main building and an adjacent one, are more spacious, and worth paying a supplement for.
While most clients will want to make use of a car to explore this short stretch of coast and the mountainous hinterland, the hotel offers a free transfer service from the railway station of Maratea, and a daily free transfer to the beach of Fiumicello.
Although you may be happy to rely on the bar’s wines and snacks for the evening, an inexpensive taxi service will take you up to the old town of Maratea which has a number of excellent restaurants, as well as those in the port, Fiumicello and the hamlet of Cersuta, approximately 1km away.
