Foresteria di San Leo
A 2 hour drive from Naples east through Campania brings you to Potenza and on to the edge of the uniquely beautiful area of the so called Lucan Dolomites which share some of the spectacular colouring and views of their more northerly namesake.
Here Maria Giovanna and her husband Peppino have spent the last 15 years developing their agriturismo from the restoration of a 13th century Benedictine monastery. The first thing that strikes you is the magnificent landscape of mountains and valleys that surround this refuge from city life. The second is when you meet the owners and are taken aback by their kindness and hospitality.
Maria is a wonderful cook and provides a varied menu of traditional Basilicatan dishes based on fresh seasonal ingredients from the local area in one of the two vaulted restaurants. This is home cooking at its best and having attended chefs' courses elsewhere in Italy, she now offers short cookery classes herself. Meanwhile Peppino is the perfect front of house host, lightening up the evening with his engaging and sympathetic manner.
The large swimming pool below the accommodation is there for that morning dip or as a reward when you return from visiting local towns and villages.
The accommodation is spread over the main building and the attractive annexe. No two rooms are alike, but all are nicely furnished and decorated in different colours. There are 2 self catering apartments each with 2 bedrooms and a kitchen each, 1 suite with 2 bedrooms but no kitchen facilities, and 4 further en suite double rooms.
If you can't relax here, you can't relax anywhere.
