The Real Hols Approach Real Holidays’ Director Matt Fisher Talks Travel

With the government releasing new information on how travel will unfold from May, Matt talks about the challenges of going abroad and how Real Holidays can help.

The Travel Lowdown

Traffic Light Summary

  • Green

Arrivals will need to take a pre-departure test as well as a PCR test on or before day two of their arrival back into the UK but will not need to quarantine on return (unless they receive a positive result) or take any additional tests, halving the cost of tests on their return from holiday

  • Amber

Arrivals will need to self-isolate at home for a period of 10 days and take a pre-departure test, a PCR test on day 2 and day 8 with the option for Test to Release on day 5 to end self-isolation early

  • Red

Arrivals will be subject to restrictions currently in place for ‘red list’ countries which includes a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, pre-departure testing and PCR testing on day 2 and 8

We believe the government’s new traffic light system will give us much more clarity for travel this summer and beyond.

So what does each category of the traffic light system mean for planning a holiday and what are the requirements for green, amber and red list countries?

Matt gives us the lowdown and his thoughts on getting travel started.

    The Power of Positivity

Although we certainly haven’t got the all-clear to travel freely, I’m feeling positive. There is a shift in tone from the government – an acknowledgment that international travel is important to the UK economy and that we need travel – whether that is the exhilaration of exploring somewhere new or bringing families together. We finally have a bit of clarity to work with and we are encouraged that the government no longer advise against booking a foreign holiday.

    Green Means Go

Rather than be downbeat about the complexity of the traffic light system, I believe it is now important to work with these new guidelines and to really understand what they mean for travel. As more detail emerges, so will a framework for us to offer clear and reliable advice to customers that want to travel.  We anticipate that the ‘Green Watchlist’ will remove much of the risk of quarantine roulette from last year and give those who wish to travel greater certainty.

    Work in Progress

We will continue to tap into the trade bodies and ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) to lobby the government about issues we feel need change such as driving down the cost of testing and urgency to commit to which countries will be considered green. Come June, the government will review the current framework – could it be that some of the protocols around testing are relaxed? By peak summer and into autumn, with the continued vaccine rollout, particularly across the US and parts of Europe, more countries may be on the green list and this would mean quicker progress to a safe and sustainable return of travel.
