Villa Hotels: Best of Both Worlds

Families often face a dilemma when choosing a holiday. Do you opt for the privacy and independence of a villa, or the facilities and activities of a resort?

Problem solved. Meet the villa-hotel, where you can combine creature comforts with socialising and spa treatments. Here are 4 of our favourites:

1. Domes of Elounda, Crete

Best for: Seaside Sophistication

Expect VIP levels of service for both children and parents at this stylish resort on Crete’s north coast. Your sleek and spacious villa comes with its own concierge, who’ll pre-stock everything from sun cream to baby-gates and groceries. Which leaves you free to relax and enjoy the views of Mirabello Bay from your private pool. The sheltered private beach is perfect for young children, as is the OFSTED approved complimentary kids club and creche. Teens aren’t left out either, with an arcade game room and water sports among the diversions.  There’s a full kitchen in each villa, although with four restaurants of top-class yet child-friendly dining, you may not use it much.

2. Borgo Pignano, Tuscany

Best for: Countryside & Culture

This beautifully restored 18th century villa hotel delivers family-friendly Renaissance romance. A working organic farm, there’s acres of space for children to play against the backdrop of rolling hills. There’s enough to keep everyone occupied for days, from hiking trails and yoga sessions to horse-riding and pizza making for kids. With so much activity, you might need to schedule relaxation time at the pair of swimming pools. The two-bedroom maisonettes and cottages feature kitchen facilities for rustling up steaming bowls of pasta, handy for the nights you’re in the restaurant feasting on Tuscan treats. Pretty hilltop towns like medieval Volterra and traffic-free Monteriggioni are nearby, while a daytrip to Florence will tick the box for art and culture.

3. La Conchiglia, Calabria

Best for: Off-Beat Beach

You may not have heard of Calabria, but Italy’s toe is home to some of the country’s best stretches of sandy coastline. Families with young children will find no better base than this friendly holiday village close to picturesque Capo Vaticano. Recently renovated villas and apartments set within spacious gardens lead to a gently shelving, powdery white beach where you’ll likely spend most of your time. There’s pretty coastal towns galore to explore too. Enjoy gelatos as you wander Tropea’s clifftop old town, or head to Pizzo for pizza on the plaza. Fun pool parties provide friendship making opportunities for children, as you recline and await another sunset over Stromboli. Everyone’s sure to return home tanned and happy.

4. Baobab Suites, Tenerife

Best for: Winter Sun

In a prime location overlooking the sea on south Tenerife’s sunny Costa Adeje, these sleek suites offer apartment-style privacy combined with hotel comforts. Modern, airy suites range from stylish studios to four-bedroom penthouses with private pools. The resort shuttle takes you down to Playa del Duque beach, or kids can play in the man-made sands next to the main outdoor heated pool. There’s a fully supervised kids club, while the sports club runs fitness classes for your energetic offspring. Explore the island independently, or head to the Experience Centre which arranges excursions from guided mountain treks to scuba diving. The best bit? Everything’s on your doorstep – it’s a short walk to beachside restaurants, shops and nightlife.
