Where To Go In September

September is among our favourite months of the year to travel. In Europe, the Med is at its warmest and the summer crowds have gone. Further afield, there’s migrating wildlife and autumnal colours to enjoy. Here are our top spots for a September getaway.

1. Greece

Best for: Island Escapes

In our humble opinion, there’s no better month than September to hit the Greek Islands. Skies are reliably blue, summer crowds have gone and the sea is like a warm bath. Island-hop between picturesque ports in search of whitewashed towns and secluded coves in the chic Cyclades. Head to Crete for ancient wonders, gorge walks and sandy beaches. The Pelion remains our top tip for laidback beach holidays in unspoiled Greece. Lazy mornings, leisurely lunches in family-run tavernas, afternoon swims in the Aegean – sure beats the school run doesn’t it?

2. Sri Lanka

Best for: Off-beat Beach

Sri Lanka’s east coast is one of Asia’s few reliably dry beach destinations in September. In Passikdauh, days can be spent enjoying calm waters, white sands and water sports. When night falls, it’s all about beach barbecues and seafood curries under the stars. Combine your stay with some time exploring the ancient sites of the Cultural Triangle, where you can also visit the elephant herds of Minneriya National Park. At this time of year, you’ll see them congregating in large groups around the park’s main waterhole as part of the annual Gathering.

3. Central Italy

Best for: Fly-drives

If you’re looking to hit the road, few pleasures are greater than driving Tuscany’s rolling countryside or exploring Umbrian hilltop towns against a late-summer sunset. Whether you’re into history and culture, food and wine or hiking and biking, central Italy has it all. Combine the legendary with the little-known on a fly-drive from Tuscany to Le Marche. Blend city and country by spending a few days exploring Renaissance treasures in Florence, then move on to Borgo Pignano, a charming country estate set on a working organic farm.

4. Canada

Best for: Wildlife

September is right in the middle of British Columbia’s salmon run, so is among the best months to get a glimpse of grizzly bears in the wild. Head to Vancouver Island, where you can watch as the bears congregate at the waterside to gorge on the leaping salmon, all intent on gathering their breakfast and seemingly oblivious to your presence. While sightings can never be totally guaranteed, it’s common to see several bears at a time – including new cubs. As if that’s not enough, September is also a prime time to spot migrating orcas and humpback whales.

5. Lecce

Best for: City Breaks

Famed for some of Italy’s loveliest beaches, Puglia is also home to the Baroque city of Lecce. With architectural surprises around almost every corner and fewer visitors than Rome or Florence, it’s our favourite spot for an alternative Italian city break. Nothing beats a September stroll around the historical centre’s spiderweb of streets and alleyways, squares and churches. There’s a choice of lovely places to stay too. La Fiermontina is shady oasis with a tranquil outdoor pool, while Mantatelure is a charming residence hidden along one of the ancient centre’s cobbled streets.
