  • 8 day itinerary contrasting Granada's mountains with the winding streets of the Albaicín district

    Day 1

    Arrival in Málaga and journey to the Alpujarra. Route notes supplied to you will point out attractions on the way. One of your stops will include: Capileira with its whitewashed houses and steep gorge of Barranco Poqueira. That night you will stay in Capileira with the opportunity to stroll through the delightful village at sundown visiting.

    Day 2

    You will be met at your hotel by your guide who will take you on a circular trail of around 10 kilometres through the gorge. In the afternoon there will be time to relax or wander the streets of the village. Other activities are available including painting lessons and horse riding.

    Day 3

    Take the scenic mountain roads to Granada stopping at some scenic villages en route. When you arrive at the Alhambra your expert guide will meet you explaining the history of the complex. After you will return to your choice of hotel. From here, take a trip to the local town where you can sample the cuisine in Tapas bars.

    Day 4

    Biking in the mountains; walking tour in Granada’s historic quarters. Take a 30 minute drive to the mountain ranges known as the Sierras de Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara, an area of great natural beauty protected as a Natural Park. Here you will be met by local representatives in the attractive small town of Alhama de Granada, who will set you up with your hybrid bikes, map and route notes. The ride is a circular loop ride from Alhama, passing small white villages and the aquamarine-blue lake of Bermejales in the Natural Park. Distance is around 50 kilometres (which can be shortened (35 kilometres) or lengthened (70 kilometres) as you wish, and should take you between 5-6 hours', including time for stops for drinks, photos and lunch. Back in Alhama you might like to look around the town, its old streets, magnificent church, and views over the deep gorge that descends below it. In the early evening explore with your local guide the historic Albaicin and Sacromonte quarters in Granada.

    Day 5

    Take a drive from Granada through the mountains and head towards one of the last stretches of virgin coastline left in Spain, the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Níjar. On the way you may like to stop in the region of Guadix, where you can see many cave houses carved into the hillside. As you near Almería you will skirt the Desert of Tabernas, a stark but beautiful landscape that has been used in “Spaghetti Westerns” to portray the American Wild West. San José, your base for the final 3 nights, once a fishing village and now a bustling tourist centre, retains its charm and has a good array of restaurants (its fresh fish being the star attraction in many.)

    Overnight: San Jose

    Day 6

    This morning you will be met by a local guide who will take you on a hike along a stunning trail which goes along the headlands of the volcanic massif of Cabo de Gata region and affords superb views over the Mediterranean before dropping down to the sheltered sandy coves and beaches of the shoreline. Chances to swim before you stop at the small fishing hamlet of La Isleta del Moro. Take lunch in the village and carry on without your guide to the stunning beaches of San Jose.

    Overnight: San Jose

    Day 7

    Return to the village of La Isleta del Moro, today, where you will be met by our local representatives and take to the waters in a fun morning that combines snorkeling and sea-kayaking in the clear, turquoise waters around the headland, exploring coves. Take the rest of the day to relax on the sandy beaches or explore the village.

    Day 8

    Depending on the time of your departure from Málaga airport you may have time en route to make a few stops, making use of the informative Route Notes provided. Buen viaje!
