  • Stylish and romantic Tuscan country estate close to the medieval town of Volterra

Located in the centre of a 750-acre organic estate, the sensitively restored and privately-owned Borgo features an 18th century villa and hamlet dating back to Etruscan times.

There is plenty to do within the estate, and guests can be as active or relaxed as they wish. Nestled on the slope of a hill beneath the villa, the outdoor infinity pool provides expansive views of the Tuscan countryside and is surrounded by a limestone terrace with chaises lounges and parasols. Adjacent to the pool area there is an outdoor bar, perfect for long lazy days. A separate, smaller pool for children is scheduled to open during the 2017 season. Guests can explore the vast estate independently by foot or bike, while guided tours of the beehives and vegetable gardens are on offer.

There is so much to do at Borgo Pignano that you will be spoiled for choice. Active pursuits include trekking and mountain biking, with trail maps provided, and the estate’s virgin woodland and fields is ideal for long walking tours. Borgo Pignano is home to a group of gentle and well-trained horses, with riding lessons for beginners on offer. Organised guided horse-riding excursions can also be arranged, while experienced horse riders are free to journey alone and follow the well-marked trails through the woods and fields. Group yoga and pilates sessions are conducted in the indoor yoga room or outside on the lawn, while those looking to learn a skill can sign up to cooking or art classes.

Children of all ages are welcomed at Borgo Pignano, with summer seasonal activities designed specifically for younger guests. These include nature walks, pizza making and arts and crafts sessions.

The Villa Pignano restaurant offers a fine dining experience utilising the freshest ingredients from the estate’s own organic vegetable gardens. During the summer months, there is also the option to dine at the casual Trattoria Al Fresco where guests can enjoy classic wood fired pizzas and authentic Tuscan fare within the beautiful gardens.

    Rooms

Borgo Pignano’s main building is an 18th century villa surrounded by traditionally planted English gardens overlooking pristine landscapes of Tuscany that have changed little since Renaissance times.

Perched on a hilltop, the 18th century villa accommodation offers stunning views of olive groves, vineyards, fields and woods. There are 16 elegant rooms and suites, some with original frescoes and all with ensuite marble and travertine bathrooms. With an emphasis on relaxation, rooms do not feature TVs but these can be requested.

La Canonica, the Priest’s house, adjoins the ancient church of San Bartolomeo and contains original features such as medieval stonework, archways, columns, vaulted ceilings, terracotta floors and restored medieval frescoes. This property dates from the 13th Century and provides an opportunity to stay in an architecturally significant building a few steps across the courtyard from the villa. La Canonica can be used as one large 3 bedroomed house or independently divided as two separate suites.

There are also a selection of 2 bedroom maisonettes and countryside cottages, all within an easy walk of the main villa, restaurant, gardens and infinity pool. Each is private and secluded and all are designed and decorated in an elegant Tuscan style with kitchen facilities.
