Small luxury hotel on the sunny west coast of unspoiled La Palma
Set amidst banana trees on the rocky, black-sand coast of La Palma, the recently opened Hotel Hacienda de Abajo has been classified as the Canary Islands’ first ‘Emblematic Hotel’ in light of its historic heritage. The main building, Casa Principal de Tazacorte, dates back to the 17th century and has been lovingly restored by the descendants of the original owners who manage the property. An impressive collection of art and antiques from the owners’ private collection is on display throughout the hotel, while the two new wings which house the majority of the accommodation blend seamlessly with the original architecture and the lush tropical gardens which surround them.
The elegant El Sitio restaurant serves an innovative mix of traditional Canarian and international dishes and is beautifully furnished with hanging chandeliers and a rich collection of artworks on display. Sumptuous buffet breakfasts are served in the El Sitio bar, which can be enjoyed alfresco on the terrace alongside expansive Atlantic views.
Set amidst lush gardens, the heated outdoor pool is perfect for relaxing days while for more indulgence the spa houses a sauna and jacuzzi and offers a range of beauty and massage treatments. A peaceful ambience is ensured as the hotel does not allow children under the age of 16, making this the perfect place for couples to spend some time unwinding in the tranquil surroundings.
The 32 individually furnished and decorated rooms are dotted around the grounds in separate low-rise buildings. Beautiful antiques and reclaimed wooden doors provide a sense of historic style, while modern comforts such as iPod docks are also present and correct. Classic Rooms are located on the upper floors and feature plantation views, while for those seeking outdoor space both the Superior and larger Premium Room categories come with either a terrace or balcony. The three Deluxe Rooms are housed in the historic Casa Principal and feature original wood floors and ceilings and on the upper floor is the magnificent Suite which has superb ocean views from its wide balcony.
