São Lourenço do Barrocal - Portugal

Discover a wild side to Portugal in the little-known region of Alentejo where life slows amid rolling national parks, fields of cork oaks and a landscape that provides sensational wine and rich olive oil.

In the heart of Portugal’s Alentejo, this feels like the real deal.

Perhaps it’s because the working farm has been owned by the same family for 200 years, so the terracotta-tiled whitewashed farm buildings and cobbled courtyards have a feeling of absolutely belonging.

Maybe it’s the encircling 780-acre farmland studded with olive trees, bee-filled meadows and neat rows of vines. It could simply be the generous attention to detail from the owners to create a rural idyll for families and couples. Here holiday-makers can get away from the trappings of modern life and enjoy life on the farm, with spacious pared-back farm rooms and rustic-chic cottages to retreat to.

    • COST

7 night itineraries from £6,350 for a family of four (2 adults and 2 children under 12) including 4 nights in a 2 bedroom Yard Cottage at Sao Lourenço, 3 nights at Martinhal Family Suites in Lisbon. Flights and intermediate car hire included.

    Farm-to-table

Every day here has a rustic simplicity – start with a wholesome ‘farm-to-table’ breakfast of cured ham, freshly bread baked, homemade jams and fresh juices. Enjoy a picnic in a flower-filled meadow for lunch and return at dinnertime to eat at one of the farm’s two restaurants. The quality of food here is extremely high, especially as they produce their own olive oil and excellent wine, which you can sample from the casks on wine tastings.

    Back to Nature

Spend idyllic days here in the encircling countryside. Guests are encouraged to explore and connect with nature on walks, bike rides or on horseback. Even the sleek swimming pool is carved around a granite bolder with a cement finish to allow it to merge beautifully into its natural surroundings.

For something special, lift off in a hot air balloon to soar above the farm and get a different perspective on this peaceful escape.

Make the most of the Alentejo countryside - I recommend grabbing a bike and trundling through olive groves. The hotel give you a map to follow with stops for picnics and bird watching.
