Make sure to chat through your favourite dishes with the fantastic chefs here, they are happy to conjure up your favourite foods or even suggest a local delicacy you might not have come across before.

As part of a tour around Kerala, a few days interlude at Windermere River House will recharge your batteries while offering an insight into local life with opportunities on the river, in local villages and in the surrounding forests. With just five bedrooms set in a roomy two-storey colonial-style building, Windermere River House is surrounded by grassy lawns, with the flowing Periyar River in front, backed by evergreen forests. It’s a very natural spot, where your stay will be sound tracked by the call of birds and the splash of the river.

Ideal for nature-loving couples, Windermere River House is also the perfect setting for families. The expansive lawn, granite-edged swimming pool and gardens full of secret spots are ideal for children, and parents love the peaceful, authentic atmosphere. The open-sided restaurant is the scene of traditional Keralan cuisine, based on recipes passed down through the generations with produce from the local farm, fish from the river and fruit and veg from Windermere’s own garden and orchard.

Most of all, everyone who visits enjoys the opportunity to be immersed in Keralan culture. There are a surprising amount of activities, so you can pick what suits you or your family best. Birdwatchers can explore the forests with a bird expert spotting cuckoos and Indian rollers or more rare species such as a peninsular bay owl or Malabar hornbill.  Active types can cycle through coconut plantations or kayak and fish on the river. A visit to a traditional Keralan farmhouse is an interesting way to learn about rubber tapping and you will also be invited to a curry lunch with a local family. Back at Windermere River House, take a yoga class in the breezy studio or cool off in the pool, before watching the sun dip behind the verdant hills.
